At the same time I was urging our grantees to create rubrics to advance their own work, my program colleagues at the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and I took a stab at it ourselves. We asked ourselves the prompting question, Is there a core performance to our work? and we answered, The site visit! Even though we had many proposals to review each funding cycle, we took it as a matter of pride that we visited each organization personally, in order to better understand their work and to pay our respects.

We began brainstorming criteria for success and quickly realized we had three rubrics on our hands, or at least a rubric in three parts: “Quality of Preparation”; “Quality of Visit and Conversation”; and “Quality of Aftermath/Outcomes.” For our levels of performance, we chose:

1

Poor

Unacceptable

2

Okay

Acceptable

3

Our Standard:

Respect for Grantees

4

Our Goal:

Exceeding the Standard
